Skateboards for Beginners Buyers Guide
Finding the perfect skateboard for each rider, comes with experience. When you are a beginner, it is harder to make the proper selection. There are many things that people can learn to help a beginner make a proper selection. The more knowledge a beginner has, the better chance they have in selecting the proper skateboard for them to learn on. There are a variety of different decks, trucks, wheels, bearings and bushings to choose from, along with the size of the deck and personal choice of graphics and designs and styles. A board has the concave, kicks, and many other things to consider. There is the flexibility and pop of the skateboard and the ease of movements and control of the skateboard that helps to determine whether it is a good skateboard for beginners to learn on. More qualified skateboarders know what type of kicks and the lengths and widths and the type of bearings they need to accomplish their tricks and their riding styles. There are long boards and short boards and cruisers not every board is good for every skateboarder. Some riders and tricksters are rough and do extreme tricks that are very hard on the skateboards and those riders will have to have a higher quality board to withstand their activities. Most boards do not last these enthusiasts very long.
The decks are the part of the skateboard that riders will stand on. This part of the board is designed with different concaves, kicks, and has a top and a bottom. The top is where the grip tape is attached, and the bottom is where the graphics or the artwork is applied. The decks are made from a variety of different materials such as maple, bamboo, plastic and even various types of wood that are called shop boards, that will vary in strength and durability. There are thin layers of what is called maple veneer and these layers are glued together some of them with a cold pressure construction. The more layers that are put together, the stronger and more durable the decks are made. Some of the 9 ply or 9 layers will handle the weight of a skateboarder up to 220 pounds. The standard number of layers seem to be 7 ply or 7 layers of this thin wood. The decks come in different lengths and widths and are a huge part of the skateboard. The deck is the part of the board that everything else attaches too. When you purchase just the skateboard deck, it is normally predrilled with holes that the truck attaches too.
Other than the right style of board for your style of skateboarding, the width is also very important factor when selecting the right deck. If you are someone with small feet, you do not want to get a wide board. When a board is too wide for your feet, it can cause you to have problems controlling it because it takes a lot of effort to keep your board under control. Many weaker or beginner skateboarders do not have the strength to keep a wider board under control. Unless someone is an avid skateboarder the length of the deck does not really matter. The short decks are necessary for many of the tricks.
Grip tape is put on the top of the skateboard deck to help the rider hold keep their traction. Some grip tape is applied to the entire top of the deck allowing a good footing for the entire board. Other grip tape is put on in strips near the area where a rider puts their feet that will give them the traction to ride their board. Not all boards come with grip tape so a roll of grip tape may have to be purchased separately so it can be added to your board.
The trucks are another key component to your skateboard. Each skateboard has trucks, one for the front and the other one is for the back or for the head and the tail. The truck is a metal axel that the wheels attach to. The holes that are normally predrilled in a skateboard is what the truck attaches too. It attaches with a flat plate that lines up with the holes and must be set tight to the board and aligned straight and snug to keep your wheels secure. It is vital to buy a heavy-duty quality made truck that will hold up to the everyday jumping and riding of a skateboarder. The trucks have a lot to do with how your skateboard controls and rides. There are trucks made from aluminum alloy, that havoc has used to provide one of the top of the line trucks for beginners and easy riding skateboarders. There are others that are made of high-quality heavy-duty metals that are heavier and can handle the rougher skateboarders that do the harder tricks. Making the proper selection for the proper type of skateboarding is a very important choice when purchasing your skateboard or the individual parts to build your own, which is what many avid skateboarders choose to do.
Mounting bolts are used to mount the trucks to the skateboard deck. These mounting bolts need to be designed from high quality and is classified as hardware for your skateboard.
Riser pads are made from rubber and come two for each complete skateboard, basically one for each truck. They are used to put space between the wheels and the deck to keep them from touching. This provides protection during a hard turn or a hard landing and makes the transaction smoother. The Riser pads also keeps the metal separated from the wood on the deck acting like a shock absorber which helps to soften the landing.
The wheels attach to the axels on the truck with the bearings. There are several different types and makes of wheels. There can be obtained in various colors, styles, sizes and made from a variety of different materials. Some of them are made from materials that make them harder, while others are made from materials that make them a softer wheel. Larger sized wheels are designed for speed so the larger wheels will normally give you a smoother and faster ride. The smaller wheels normally work for best for doing tricks. The most common wheels are made from polyurethane. This is a rubbery type of substance that helps the wheels to grip. This substance can be made into various levels of hardness which is important when you are getting wheels especially for your longboard which works best with the harder wheels.
Spacers are a small piece of metal that is used to separate the bearings at a fixed or even width. This keeps the bearings from rubbing together and causing friction and the bearings to wear out faster.
Skateboard bearings are made up of 7 smaller parts. C- rings are thin rings that fit into the groves on the outside of the bearings to lock the shields in place. The bearing shields are medium sized rings that go on the sides of the bearings that will prevent dirt from getting inside of the small ball bearings. The outer ring that is the metal exterior that all other parts fit into. Next is the inner ring that fits into the outer ring its purpose is when you slide your bearing/wheel onto the axel the outer ring is what the axel fits into. Then there is the steel or ceramic balls that rest in the ball retainer. Then of course is the ball retainer that holds the ball bearings in place and lets the caster spin around them. Then there is the rubber seal that helps to protect the bearing and helps to keep out the dirt and debris.
The skateboard bearings are designed to fit inside of the wheels to mount the wheels to the axels. Each wheel requires two bearings. Bearings are rated with an ABEC rating that ranges from 1-9 and the lower the rating the less quality and durable the bearings appear to be. For example, an ABEC-1 bearing is made from a cheaper quality steel and is the crudest and the least accurate. It should be priced as a cheaper bearing. Compared to the ABEC-9 that is an extremely fast bearing that is made from more quality materials and is going to be more expensive. This bearing is used by people that demand a fast speed such as downhill racers.
Bearings are designed mainly from steel and ceramic. As a rule of thumb the more expensive a steel bearing is, the better quality that the bearing is. The cheaper bearings are many times made from a lesser quality steel and have been known to cause the bearing to lock up or seize causing the wheel to stop turning. The ceramic bearings are still steel except for the bearings themselves and some of them use more than two bearings per wheel. These bearings cause less friction and offer a smoother ride for your skateboard. Many avid skateboarders when purchasing a complete skateboard, will change out the bearings for ones that will suit their riding style and abilities better. The most common bearing that is standardly put in the complete skateboards is the ABEC-5.
The nuts go on the end of the axels to hold the wheels, bearings and spacers in place. It is very important to make sure these stay tight so that you do not lose your skateboard wheels while skateboarding. The wisest choice is to select the locking nuts. This will help to ensure that they will stay in place and keep you safer while you are riding and doing tricks. These nuts will also help you to allow you to loosen or tighten your wheel sometimes even out of the box skateboarders will say that the wheel is on too tight or too loose. This can be done with a skateboard tool.

Conclusion And Final Skateboards for Beginners Recommendations
When selecting the best skateboards for beginners, there are many things to learn and know so that a proper skateboard can be purchased. There are skateboards that are not designed for beginners that are harder to control and have way too much speed for someone just learning how to ride and how to do the basic tricks. Most beginners do better starting off with a shortboard that is easy to control and maneuver. There are several companies that design special boards with mainly beginners in mind. It is important that a beginner gets one that is the proper width for their feet size. The proper width helps to keep control of the board and helps them to have one that they can handle. If the board is too wide, then it takes a lot of strength to control it and to be able to maneuver it as they are learning. It is important for a beginner to like their board so many boards especially for beginners are available in various colors and designs. Letting your beginner choose their color and design for their board will help them to be prouder and more excited about showing it off to their friends. Skateboarding is a very good activity for people that are young at heart. It is good exercise and gets kids off their electronics and outside for exercise and socializing with their friends. Another thing to consider when purchasing your beginners skateboard is your budget. I would suggest for a beginner that the Merkapa skateboard complete for beginners might be a great place to start especially if your child is around the age of near being a teen. The lighted wheels and the great color choices will make this skateboard even more fun. The lightweight and easy to maneuver features are also a plus for a beginner. The rear kick tail and the 22-inch board will help make it easier to start learning how to do some of the simple tricks such as the Ollie. Are you purchasing it for your child or is your child making their purchase with money they have earned? No matter what the answer is make sure that the purchase fits into your budget.
FAQs About Skateboards for Beginners
There are still many questions that people still ask and are looking for answers about purchasing a skateboard for beginners. Below are just a few of those questions.
When purchasing a skateboard for a beginner, what are the most important things to watch for?
When purchasing a skateboard for a beginner, it can be very confusing. There are many skateboards to choose from and finding the right one will take some knowledge. When you are purchasing a skateboard for a child especially, you need to make sure that you are not purchasing one that is too wide. A skateboard that is too wide will be too hard for a beginner to handle. It might give them a little more room for balance and to put their feet, but it will take a lot more strength to maneuver and control the board. For a smaller child, many of them can not handle the challenge. Another factor is the speed, make sure that the wheels and the bearings are designed for beginners and not for a more advanced skateboarder. When a beginner gets on a skateboard that goes too fast and they do not have the ability to control the board, it can cause them to get injured or to possibly crash into someone else causing them to be injured. You will also need to know where your child will be riding the skateboard. Will they be riding on the sidewalk or street near you or is there a skateboard park nearby? Is the surface smoother or is the surface more on the rough side? This will also determine which skateboard is the best to purchase for your beginner. A skateboard that is lighter in weight making it easier for a smaller person to handle and carry should also be a good thing to consider.
Are skateboards honestly good for transportation?
Skateboards can be good for transportation. They are great exercise and can be used to replace time spent at the gym. When you have a few miles to get to the store or to school, skateboarding seems to make the trip a lot faster than walking. Skateboarding can be great to run errands, go to school or to even go to work. There are a few things to remember when you are using a skateboard for transportation. One is that there may be a variety of different terrain or rough areas on the sidewalks or roadways that you will be allowed to use. There may also be steps or even drop offs to get on and off the walkways. Purchasing the proper skateboard is very important. Many that use a skateboard as transportation prefer a short board. There are several reasons. Some find a short board easier to control and maneuver. When you enter a restaurant or a market, your short board will fit in the umbrella stand or under your table or your chair. This makes them easier to handle when you get to where you are going. The short boards are also normally lighter in weight and do not add to your load when you go shopping and have bags that you are bringing back with you. When you are heading to class on campus, a short board might even fit into your back pack or under your desk. When dealing with a variety of different terrain, purchasing soft wheel makes handling the rougher areas on your route easier to handle. The soft wheels give more traction and control. Finding a wider board, could also give you more room and the ability to have better balance, keeping you from sliding off of your board while you are on the move.
When beginning to skateboard, what common mistakes do beginners need to watch out for?
When learning to skateboard, many beginners must learn a footing style on the board. Beginners see someone using a certain foot stance and they immediately want to try it, it is important to learn and have the ability to work out one-foot stance before bouncing back and forth between several. This can cause the beginner to become confused and not be able to properly master any of the footing positions properly. The proper technique when popping your board, is to bring back your back leg as close to your chest as possible. This folds your knee and helps you to ride and control your pop and the bounce afterwards. It is important also to keep your shoulders parallel with your board. This helps you to keep your balance and control on proper riding techniques and simple beginning tricks such as the Ollie. Skateboarding is also one of those sports that you must focus and concentrate on to learn. You must not be afraid of your board and have confidence in yourself and your abilities. Remember that you purchased your board to have fun. Skateboarding is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. When a beginner is putting too much pressure on them selves and taking away from the fun then it will normally take longer for them to learn and sometimes the fear from the pressure makes skateboarding a thing of the past.
Is a penny board good for a beginner?
A penny board is one of the boards that is good for a beginner. It offers a light deck and truck, making it easier to be carried and stored for someone learning. It also normally goes slower, which will allow the beginner to learn control without having to deal with the speed. One problem with the penny board, is that it is narrower and will give the rider less room on the board. This gives them less space to keep their balance and to balance the board. It will take some practice like all boards for a beginner and they will have to learn how to keep their balance and to balance their board. The Penny board is designed with one tail which makes it available to Ollie on the board only in one direction. It is best to have a penny board with soft wheels for traction and to handle a rougher pavement or sidewalk. If your beginner is planning on just cruising and learning that good before starting to try to learn tricks a penny board is a great place to start. If your beginner is planning to cruise and jump up and down off sidewalks and etc. then they might be better off starting with a plain short board, with slower bearings and soft wheels for traction.
Is a longboard a good board for a beginner to learn on?
A longboard can be a good board for a beginner to start on, but there are several variables their balance and footing. You need to be careful and make sure the longboard has slower bearings, because a longboard normally comes with faster bearing. A slower skateboard is better for a beginner until they can gain control. You can always change the bearings out yourself to give your skateboard a slower or faster ride. A longboard is not the best board to do tricks on for a beginner. It is basically a good cruiser and as long as your beginner is going to be satisfied with just cruising and not doing tricks a long board could be a good choice. An avid skateboarder will use a long board as a means of transportation and will also use it to race downhill races and some of them can do various tricks. Remember if you select a skateboard no matter if it is a long board or a shortboard or even a penny board, and you have started learning and need more speed or something on that order, you can always change out the bearings and tires to offer a totally different type of ride for your skateboard experience.
Is skateboarding safe for girls?
Anytime anyone chooses to skateboard, there are risks and dangers. Of course, anyone could get hurt when getting on a skateboard. Skateboarding has always seemed to be a male dominant world, but there are no rules that girls can not skateboard. Girls along with boys must be safe and learn how to skateboard by learning the easier stuff first. Balance on the skateboard is a great place to start. All skateboarders need to wear helmets to protect their heads. Wearing elbow pads and knee pads would be a smart choice for any beginner. Everyone is going to fall off their skateboard and to have on protective gear would help the rider from being injured. There are females that are professional skateboarders and they compete in competitions. It basically depends upon who has the love of skateboarding. Just remember to never force anyone to skateboard. Skateboarding is not for someone who has a fear of the board or the tricks that they think people will force them to perform. Skateboarding is for those with the love of the sport and are not afraid of getting hurt or having the freedom of flying around and doing flips on a board with some wheels. This can be scary for some people and those people should never be pressured or forced because those people will be more apt to get hurt. So all honestly, skateboarding is for anyone who has the heart and the health for it and yes including girls.
