Skateboarding today has become a very popular sport. It is loved from beginners to professional sports. Skateboarding is great exercise and entertainment from an art form to a mode of transportation. There are long boards and short boards and cruisers just to name a few. From the young to the young at heart, skateboarding has its fans and its brave who love to fly through the air with just their boards. There are those who are still young at heart but use their boards to go to school or work but prefer to keep their wheels on the ground. One of the important factors with operating your skateboard and keeping it cruising at great speed and smoothness is the bearings in the wheels. Without quality bearings, your board will not roll smoothly and is much harder to control. Plus, if you are a speedster, it will not go nearly fast enough for you. Selecting the best bearings for your skateboard is very important and is a vital part of being satisfied with your skateboarding experiences.

Skateboard Bearings Buyers Guide
Finding the best skateboard bearings to meet your needs is very important part of skateboarding. Most riders that use the long boards, will use them to cruise or for down hill racing. These skateboarders will want bearings that are fast and smooth. If a down hill racer is wanting to win a race and he has slower spinning bearings that is not a good thing because his board will go slower, and he will not have a good chance of winning. There are many factors in determining a good bearing. Some bearings take a lot of use and abuse and will break. Your bearings are like many vital parts and must be taking care of. They can get dry on lubrication or can get dirt or debris inside of them and this all will cause them to seize up and stop spinning. When dirt or debris get inside of your bearing, they can cause the bearing balls to pit or become deformed. This will cause friction and heat and will cause damage to your bearing. It is important to keep them clean and lubricated. Even if your bearing is clean and has no dirt or debris, when the lubricant has leaked out or dried up then the bearing will cause friction by turning with metal on metal and it will not spin freely. Proper care of your skateboard bearings is an important part of skateboarding. Finding a proper bearing for your skateboard is very important to all skateboarders.
Skateboard bearings are used to fit inside of the skateboard wheel to mount the wheel to the axle. The entire bearing is made from several different parts. The standard size of a skateboard bearing is an 8mm core with a 22-inch outer diameter and a 7 mm width. These standard size bearings will fit many different types of skateboards, skates and scooters along with many other items. Most skateboard bearings are sold in a set of 8 but you can find some that can be purchased in a larger or smaller quantity.
Many bearings are rated by the ABEC rating system. This gives the bearings a rating from 1 through 9 or sometimes higher. With the use of this system the higher the number the better quality the bearing should be. For example, with this system if a bearing is rated as an ABEC-1, this means that this bearing is made from a cheaper grade of steel, not of the highest precision and is a lower cost than a more quality bearing. If a bearing is rated as an ABEC-9 then this bearing is made from a higher quality material, is a very fast bearing and is a more expensive bearing to purchase. This system does not take everything into consideration such as the materials that the bearings may be made of or the ability to handle a heavy load or a hard landing such as many skateboarders experience. There are quality bearing manufacturers that do not use the ABEC rating system for their bearings. This does not mean that their bearings are not quality it just means they know when it comes to skateboard bearings there are very important things that are not rated in this rating system.
The balls are in the center of the bearing and are normally made of steel, ceramic or titanium. They set inside of a ball retainer and allow the bearing casing to spin around them. The balls of a bearing is the most important part, because they are what gives your wheel the spin or can lock up if not taken care of properly. The balls also are what gives your bearing a smooth spin or it can be rough if the balls are pitted are not properly lubed.
The ball retainer is what the balls set in and helps to hold them in place while the casing spins around them. The ball retainer can also be called the Delrin Crown and is many times made from nylon.
Small metal ring that fits inside of the outer ring. The center ring is what the axle fits through when you put your wheel/axle on the truck of your skateboard.
The outer ring is a round metal exterior that all of the other bearing parts fit into. This is what holds the bearings together.
A medium size ring that fits on the side of the bearing to keep the dirt and debris out of the bearing balls. The shield is also used to keep the lubrication inside of the bearing and on the balls where it needs to be. Many skateboard bearings have two shields, one on each side which helps to protect the bearing balls keeping them where they do not need cleaned and lubed as often.
C ring is a thin ring that will fit into a groove on the outside of the bearing that will hold the shields in place.
The rubber seal is a soft rubber ring that goes on the outside of the bearing to help to protect the inside of the bearing from dirt and debris. This seal will also help to prolong the life of your bearing.
Bearing spacers are one of the bearing parts that can be optional. These small metal cylinders fit in the bearing between the bearings. The reason some skateboarders like to use them is because they help to distribute the weight between the bearings, and they help to make your turns smoother and more controlled. This will also help to extend the life of your bearings.
Speed rings are another optional part that is used to help to reduce friction to help the wheels turn faster. They are thin metal washers that are slipped over the axle between the nut and the bearing. They seem to be highly recommended for a skateboarder that plans to skateboard at high rates of speed. There are some bearings that come with these but there are bearings that do not offer them. Speed rings can be purchased separately.
Maintaining Your Bearings
It is important to keep your bearings maintained. Remove they shields from your bearings and clean out any dirt or debris that may be inside. Not keeping the dirt and debris out of your bearings can cause the balls to pit or become deformed giving you a rough ride. Too much dirt or moisture can cause the grease or oil to seep out and can cause a bearing to lock up, causing the wheel to stop spinning. It is also important to re-lubricate the bearing with a grease or a racing oil. This will keep them spinning freely without any friction from metal on metal. When a bearing is maintained properly it will extend the life of the bearing but will also give you a smooth and faster ride.

Conclusion And Final Skateboard Bearings Recommendations
Finding the best skateboard bearings will be different bearings for different riders. Part of it will depend upon the type of skateboarding that you will be doing. Another part will depend upon your style or skateboarding, are you a cruiser that may use the board for transportation or do you ride hard and race or do tricks on your board? There are different types of bearings that seem to work best for different types of riding. Someone that rides easy and uses their skateboard for transportation will normally have bearings that will last a lot longer than someone who does tricks on their board. Ceramic bearings seem to be great for someone that races or for long board that like to cruise fast.
Ceramic bearings will normally last longer and give the skateboarder faster speed. Someone that is a beginner will not need bearings that are fast, they need to learn how to handle and control their board before worrying about a fast speed. Someone who rides hard and does hard jumps and tricks, will want a bearing that can handle a heavy load and take the hard hits and landings. No matter what type of bearings that you use, it is wise to keep an extra set on hand that way if you have a bearing break or lock up you will always have a spare. If you know how to switch out your bearings all you have to do is to replace the damaged one and you can keep skateboarding and not have to call it a day. If you are an average skateboarder, the Fireball Dragon Precision Bearings for Skateboards might be a great bearing to try.
This bearing has good ratings from other customers and is about the medium price range. These bearings can be ordered in an endurance bearing or a race bearing. The endurance bearing is lubricated with a heavy grease to help to keep them moving and to last a long time. The race bearings are lubed with a racing oil and they are faster right out of the box. So, the choice would be yours depending upon your abilities and your skateboarding style. They also come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Another consideration when selecting your bearings is to make sure that the bearings that you order are bearings that you can afford and will fit into your budget. It is important not to over extend your budget when there are so many different wonderful bearings out there that are available at so many different price ranges.
Frequently Asked Questions About Skateboard Bearings
There are many questions that skateboarders seem to have, especially about skateboard bearings. It is important to do your research and to have your questioned answered. Here are a few questions that might help answer some of yours.
What is the best way to lubricate your bearings?
Take your bearing out of the wheel and remove the shield. Make sure the bearing is clean and free of debris and dirt. Depending upon your choice of lubricant there are many to choose from. If you are looking for endurance some prefer a heavier grease. If you are looking for faster speeds, some prefer racing lubricant or oils and that will help prevent the friction and give you a smoother and faster spinning action. The faster the spinning action, the more speed that you will get. Take the bearing and drop a few drops of lubricant into the bearing. Take the bearing and spin it with your fingers to spread the lubricant around. Make sure that the area on the inside is lubricated and it is spinning freely. Put the shields back on and put the bearing back into the wheel. This should make your wheel spin to your satisfaction. A regular maintenance on your bearings will keep them operating smoothly and will make them last longer. Riding when it is rainy or wet can also cause your maintenance to be done more frequently. If you are using steel bearings, the moisture can cause them to rust and this is not good for any bearing. So, make sure if you are riding your skateboard in the rain or when there is water on the ground that you check your bearings more frequently.
If I have no actual bearing grease or racing oil can I use something like WD40 or Olive Oil to Lube my bearings?
Definitely no on the WD40. It is a solvent not a lubricant. The solvents will wear away on any plastic pieces and will not lubricate your bearings. This will limit the life of your bearing and cause them to wear out faster. As far as using olive oil or some other form of cooking oil I would not recommend it, but it would be better than using a solvent. The olive oil or other form of cooking oil could add some lubricant, but not the proper type and with the friction and the heat from the spinning action, the cooking type of oils are known to break down with heat. If you make that choice, then make sure that the bearing is re-lubed immediately with the proper type of grease or lubricant. Proper care of your bearings will help to make them work properly and last longer.
What makes some skateboard bearings better than others?
There are many factors when answering that questions. Some bearings are better than other such as ceramics and those made with different grades of steel. The ABEC ratings of bearings do not always take into consideration all of the things that skateboard bearings go through. They do not rate the bearings for heavy loads or things such as hard landings and such that many will have to go through. Skateboard ratings are the best to go by because they take into consideration all skateboarders have to go through. Another consideration would be the style of the skateboarder. If you are someone who races and really need the speed of a good bearing, then most bearings if they are maintained and taken care of will last a normal skateboarder quite some time. Putting them in water will make them rust and they will not last as long as someone who avoids getting the bearings wet. Many people prefer certain brands because they seem to work better with their style of skateboarding. Like I said in the beginning there are many factors to consider when finding an answer to that question. Another factor is personal preference.
Why are skateboard bearings expensive?
There are some skateboard bearings that are fairly cheap in price from what I have seen. Some of these actually have some really good reviews. Have you researched some of these bearings to see what other users have said about them? There are some that are pricier. These seem to be made from superior materials and can hold a higher weight. When you are making anything and you pay to use more quality materials, you are going to pay a higher price for the quality materials. When a skateboarder is riding on this board with two wheels and all his weight is on these wheels, which the bearings hold on and make them spin, there is a lot of weight and responsibility on the manufacturer of the bearing. What happens if you are racing down hill at a high rate of speed, standing on this board and off comes a wheel. Where will your face plant? With the quality bearings made from quality materials there is less of a chance of the bearing breaking. When a bearing locks up or seizes and the wheel stops turning, and you are speeding down hill what would happen to you? Most ceramic bearings have proven to be a higher quality and give you a smooth and faster ride, but there are some steel bearings that are honestly good. The key to all good bearings is the quality and the maintenance that you perform on your bearings. Is your safety worth an extra few dollars? Only you can make that decision and only you can determine if skateboard bearings are really that expensive.
Are steel or titanium skateboard bearings the best?
A lot of the answer to do with this question has to do with the quality of the materials that are used in the manufacturing of these bearings. Another issue is how well are you keeping up with your maintenance? Do you clean them and lubricate them on a regular basis? Both can be really good bearings if taken care of properly. Another factor is how you ride your skateboard, are you someone that rides it like transportation and cruises down the streets or sidewalks or do you get a bit wild and do jumps and hard landings? That is another factor of how long bearings will last and how good they are for your style of skateboarding. If you ride in the wet weather, ceramic is the best because it does not rust. Just keep your bearings clean and make sure you lubricate them depending upon your usage and most decent quality bearings will work just fine.
What is the purpose of a bearing in a skateboard wheel?
To start off let’s imagine just attaching your wheel to your axle with nothing else there. With the bearing in place, it allows your wheel to spin freely and takes away most of the friction. A bearing is made up of tiny balls of various materials that roll on a track and help your wheels to spin freely. As long as this area is kept free from dirt and debris or has been kept lubricated the spin is smooth and allows your wheels to turn smoothly giving you a better ride. If the bearings were not in place your tires would not spin very well on the pavement or sidewalks. You can take your wheel by itself and roll it on a hard-smooth surface and ok it rolls just fine because it is round. Now take that same wheel and add some weight to it and see how well it rolls on a smooth hard surface. Would you trust it to carry you around town just like that?
As a beginner skateboarder, how do I know what the best bearings are?
There are several ways to choose the best bearings for you and how you skateboard? One if you are a beginner you probably do not need bearings that give you a lot of speed. The first thing you need to do is learn to handle and control your skateboard. Then you can add the speed. Go to a local skatepark and you will learn a lot of information from many experienced skateboarders. They are normally glad to share their information and experiences to someone who is wanting to learn. You may also have friends that skateboard and they can share the information that they have learned about various skateboard bearings and how they worked for them. Do your research and select a bearing that you think might work well for you, then install it on your skateboard. Turn your skateboard upside down and spin the wheels. See how smoothly the wheels spin and how long they will spin. If they don’t spin the way you think they should you might need to lubricate them.
Then try this test again. Another way to check the bearings, is before you put them in the wheels, is to hold it between your fingers and spin it with your other hand. You will be able to see how long the bearing spins. You will also be able to feel if there is any rust or indentions on the bearing balls that will keep the bearing from spinning smoothly. Not all bearings will spin the same if they are not under a load. A bearing might spin great and then you add weight to it and with the friction that it is getting, it may not spin well at all or only spins for a short period of time. It might take a bit of practice and maybe trying some different bearings to see which ones work the best for you and for your style of skateboarding. Not every bearing will be the best bearing for everyone. A bearing may work the greatest for your friend but not work well for you. This can have a lot to do with the different styles of skateboarding that you both perform. The way that you distribute your weight on the board could play a role. The amount of weight that each of you are can make a difference. They type of skateboard set up that you both are riding. Do you have a longboard or a short board or a cruiser can make a difference? Enjoy and learn as much as you can, then just experiment with different bearing until you find the one that is perfect for you.
